Functional Diagnostic Medicine, is by no means a new concept, the origins date back to Hippocrates and his famous quote “Let food be thy medicine …”. It is a scientific, yet totally natural, way to achieve and maintain optimum health. Precise, non-invasive, laboratory testing uncovers the root cause of the problem, assesses symptoms, dysfunctions and imbalances and treats these using diet, nutritional supplements, sleep patterns and lifestyle changes, including stress reduction. This may sound like something your Grandparents would have preached and to a great extent this is true, however, with the added benefit of modern science, laboratory tests show in precise detail what to include, what to avoid and the respective ratios, holistically treating the cause and not the symptoms.
The ethos is simply based on the truth that our bodies are as complex and diverse as our personalities and should be treated as such. Practitioners look at the body as a whole and each patient as unique. There is no ‘one size fits all’. It is a close,
therapeutic partnership between practitioner and patient. You can expect to spend a great deal more time with your functional medicine practitioner than you would with a GP. Initial consultations are generally about an hour and a half, with subsequent visits at approximately an hour, ongoing phone and email access is the norm. Patient empowerment is at the root of the beliefs and an experienced practitioner will take time to ensure that patients fully understand all causes and implications and, more importantly, will ensure that their patient is fully educated to be able to take control of their own long term health.
